Cascade De Rouget (1)

La Cascade de Rouget, Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval

Situated at the entrance to the largest nature reserve in the Haute-Savoie, Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval is a natural wonder, and destination not to be missed while holidaying in Samoëns and the Grand Massif. Approximately 80% of Sixt’s territory is protected national park, and it offers some of our region’s most spectacular scenery, including the famous Queen of the Alps waterfall, La Cascade de Rouget.

Impressive… Magical… Sublime… Words barely describe the experience as you stand before this mighty waterfall and take in all her splendour. It’s breathtaking! Nestled into the mountainside above Salvagny, a scenic 15-minute drive from Samoëns, and 20-minutes from Morillon, the torrent surges dramatically in two huge steps, falling for over 80 metres. You literally feel nature come alive through this waterfall - its power, its might!

There’s no time like the Spring for a visit to the Cascade de Rouget. Rising temperatures, late afternoon storms, and rapidly melting snow – it’s the time of year she’s often raging at her most powerful. The summer months offer some spectacular viewing too. In fact, a visit to the Cascade de Rouget is something you can enjoy at any time of year, including the winter.

Throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn, the cascade is easily accessed by car, or if you’re feeling fit you can also hike. Maps are available from the Tourist Office. Parking is available at the waterfall and there’s even a lovely mountain restaurant with overlooking deck. (The restaurant is only open in the Summer months.) During winter the road closes, but a clearly marked snowshoe hike will lead you from Salvagny, near the Tremplin ski jump, all the way to the cascade, now transformed into a stunning sculpture of ice!

The Cascade de Rouget is a must-see during your holiday to the Alps, as Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval more generally. Easily accessible from your chalet or apartment in Morillon or Samoens, Alps Accommodation also has a lovely selection of chalets in Sixt itself.
