Nordic, or cross country skiing, is a great way to explore nature away from the crowds and the Samoens area provides a great selection of pistes for all abilities. The nordic skiing in the Samoens area can be divided into 2 distinct areas; The Giffre valley, and the Col de Joux Plane. Information on routes and piste conditions.
The Giffre valley sector offers 46km of pistes stretching from Verchaix, through Samoens, as far as Fer-a-Cheval at the top of the valley. There are a variety of trails from 2km to over 16km which should keep skiiers of all abilities happy.
The Col de Joux Plane sector offers 35km of fantastic snow-sure pistes at an altitude of 1700m. These give wonderful views extending from the Giffre Valley, over the entire Grand Massif ski area to Mont Blanc in the background. The area is accessed via a shuttle bus from the Samoens Tourist office. There is also a designated tobogganing area on the Col de Joux Plane suitable for all ages!
The free Shuttle Bus runs between Morillon, Verchaix, Samoëns and Sixt Tourist Offices, and Fer-a-Cheval. Visit our Transport page for more information.
During the February holiday weeks, each area often has one night-time Cross Country Skiing session, with equipment hire and lessons available on site. It's a great way to have a go without missing out on alpine skiing time! We recommend a head torch! The Tourist Offices will have further information on these evenings closer to the time.
